Water Safety Advocacy

Water has shaped much of John Abdou’s life and work — as an athlete, coach, Olympic performance leader, and advocate. His commitment to water safety grows out of a simple belief: every person deserves the opportunity to be safe, confident, and supported around water. Through his service as a board member with the California Water Safety Coalition, Diversity In Aquatics, and Black Star Polo, John works to elevate the importance of water safety, drowning prevention, access to aquatics, and the life-changing value of learning to swim.

Advocacy & Board Service

John’s water safety advocacy is grounded in decades of experience in aquatics, coaching, Olympic sport, and community leadership. He has served in board and leadership roles with organizations committed to expanding access, representation, education, and safety in and around the water, including the California Water Safety Coalition, Diversity In Aquatics, and Black Star Polo.

Through this work, John supports efforts to reduce drowning risk, increase aquatic access, promote water safety education, and create more inclusive pathways into swimming, water polo, and aquatic environments. His advocacy connects public health, youth development, sport opportunity, and community responsibility.

Community Education

John supports education efforts that help families, schools, youth programs, and community organizations better understand water safety. These conversations can include drowning prevention, swim readiness, supervision, access, confidence around water, and the role communities can play in protecting children and families.

Drowning Prevention

Drowning prevention requires awareness, access, education, and consistent community commitment. John’s advocacy centers on helping people understand that water safety is teachable, preventable, and deeply connected to equity, opportunity, and public health.

Access to Aquatics

Access matters. Many families and communities face barriers to swim lessons, safe pools, aquatic programming, and trusted instruction. John is committed to supporting efforts that expand access to aquatics and help more people experience the safety, confidence, and joy that can come from being in and around water.

Speaking & Workshops

John is available for water safety-related panels, community events, school presentations, parent education sessions, nonprofit gatherings, and aquatic leadership conversations. His background allows him to speak from multiple perspectives: athlete, coach, Olympic performance leader, parent, board member, and advocate.

Partnership Opportunities

For organizations interested in advancing water safety, drowning prevention, swim education, inclusion in aquatics, or access to aquatic sport, John is open to conversations around collaboration, advocacy, speaking, and community engagement.
