Excellence without losing yourself.
John Abdou is a coach, educator, speaker, mentor, and performance leader whose work sits at the intersection of health, mindset, leadership, sport, and human development.
Across his career, John has worked in environments where performance matters deeply — from collegiate athletics to USA Water Polo and Olympic-level sport. Through those experiences, he has developed a clear belief: excellence should strengthen people, not consume them.
His work is grounded in helping people perform, lead, and grow without losing their health, identity, relationships, character, or purpose.
A Journey Through Sport, Education, and Leadership
John’s story began at UC Irvine, where he was a student-athlete on the men’s water polo team. That experience helped shape his understanding of discipline, pressure, team culture, and personal growth.
He later built his career as an educator and coach, including teaching social science and coaching water polo. His journey also included coaching roles at Bucknell University and UC Santa Barbara, where he continued developing his approach to leadership, mentorship, and athlete development.
Those early chapters gave John a deep appreciation for the people behind performance not just what they accomplish, but who they become in the process.

Olympic-Level Performance Experience
John went on to serve in national leadership roles with USA Water Polo, including High Performance Director and Chief Sport Performance Officer.
In these roles, he worked across Olympic development, coach education, athlete development, national team systems, and performance leadership. His experience in high-performance environments gave him a practical understanding of preparation, pressure, culture, trust, and standards.
It also reinforced a central lesson in his work: healthy performance cultures are not built by intensity alone. They are built through clarity, care, accountability, humility, and purpose.

Health, Wellness, and Sports Performance
John now serves at UC Irvine in health, wellness, and sports performance leadership.
This role brings together many parts of his professional journey — athletics, education, wellness, leadership, performance systems, and care for the whole person.
It reflects the larger purpose of his work: helping people and teams pursue excellence in a way that is disciplined, grounded, humane, and sustainable.
